  • Andros - Of an aristocratic finesse

Despite being the second in size island of the Cyclades, after Naxos, it is rather less promoted than most of the islands, thus remaining intact by the mass touristic invasion and keeping its historical classiness and architectural magic. It is very close to Athens, inhabited since 4000 BC. It has considerable vegetation, compared to the rest of the Cyclades, and it is very often affected by strong northern winds, which make life and sailing too hard; but on the other hand, offer coolness and an amazing clarity to the atmosphere, pleasing photographers the most. A reader of greecewithin.com, Giannis Psaroulis, provided us some of the images he shot a few days ago in Andros. We publish them with delight and we congratulate him for his photographic skills.

  • Kythnos - Terse beauty

A Cyclades island of unique aesthetic, in a distance of just one and a half hour from Lavrio, Attica. It is offering a simple beauty and images of soft curves, without any tall mountain; just hills of serene outlines. A calm and terse place, carefree and least complicated, ideal for an honest relaxation. A friend of our page from Thessaloniki, Anastasia Mytileka, was charmed by Kythnos and provided us with some of the photos she captured from it the previous days. Using simple photographic means, she made us a partaker of the island’s magic. We thank her and we congratulate her for her photographic skill.

  • Santorini Island - A feast at the edge of the crater

    01c

After each big wave the passengers on the boat were shouting: "Well done captain, may the Seven Children bless you". The captain was a young man, smiling awkwardly, holding strongly the boat's wheel. This strong shake didn't last more than ten minutes, the calmness returned while the boat got into the arc of the volcano’s caldera.

  • Santorini Island - Fertile volcanic soil

The volcanic soil keeps the temperature low and so the grapes that touch it don’t “burn”.

The dry land and the volcanic soil of Santorini give a great taste to all the agricultural products of the island. On this dark and dry land, one wouldn't expect anything to grow, but some special crops are fruitful. The earthquake was catastrophic for Santorini, but it was the salvation of the vineyards, tomatoes and the split pea cultivations.

  • Oia, Santorini Island - The worship of the sun

Every afternoon tourists from all over the world are gathered at Oia in order to enjoy the sunset.

Every afternoon big groups of summer visitors are being gathered at the westernmost part of Oia in Santorini to enjoy the sunset. They come from all over the island in order to be in time and take a place in some terrace or some mantel, from where they will have a panoramic view of the phenomenon. These gatherings happen every day for ages without any interruption, but in July and August they turn into entire people gatherings.

  • Ioulida, Kea Island - Like an eagle’s nest on the rocks

Ioulida, the capital of Kea Island, looks like an eagle’s nest on the top of the mountain. The densely built houses with shingle roofs compose a rare architectural ensemble that looks like a painting. Amongst the houses, a labyrinth of paved side-streets lead to the beautiful square of the Town Hall. No matter where you stand in Ioulida, the sea can always be seen at a distance -like looking out of an airplane window.
